We talk often in online forums about the value of physicians in 2019 and beyond. The value of a physician is demonstrated not only in the quality of care they provide to their patients but also in the quality of their interactions with the staff around them.

As doctors, we often find ourselves in stressful situations at work, but whether you’re in private practice, employed, DPC, locums, etc., the way you treat people around you dictates not only their perception of you as a person but also their perception of physicians in general.

Being a pediatrician and a father of five, I tend to think I have quite a bit of patience and rarely find myself getting overly upset and annoyed.

You're Only As Strong As Your Employees Are Affirmed

Have you heard of the book The 5 Love Languages? My wife will tell you my love language is “words of affirmation”, and I agree. I feel most appreciated when I’m told that I’ve done something well or when my hard work and efforts are recognized, as is the case with most of us.

Gary Chapman, author of The 5 Love Languages, also wrote a book called The 5 Languages of Appreciation in the Workplace. This book, geared towards employers, discusses empowering your employees through encouragement and appreciation. 

If you look at the workplace research, the number one cause of employee disengagement and turnover isn’t working too hard or not making enough money... it’s not feeling appreciated or affirmed. If you’re dealing with staff that aren’t motivated, aren’t inspired, or aren’t going above and beyond, part of the reason is YOU. I’m sorry to put it so bluntly, but it’s true. The good news is that there is hope.

Be a Bowser, Not a Mario

Anyone familiar with Nintendo’s Mario franchise is probably very confused by the title of this blog, but stay with me here...

So my kids have recently become obsessed with Mario. It’s brought back great memories from my childhood of playing Super Mario World on the Super Nintendo Entertainment System waaaaaay back in the day and Super Mario Bros before that.

As I’ve assisted my kids in defeating a boss here or there, I realized that despite his menacing appearance and antics, Bowser is by far the best people manager in the game, and is actually a character we should be emulating in business...to a certain degree...

Look at Mario. He’s stuck down in the trenches doing grunt work. He’s got Luigi and Yoshi to help but doesn’t give them any decision making power or autonomy to help advance their mission (re-capture Princess Peach, squash Bowser once and for all, eliminate those annoying plant things, etc).
